Music as a universal language capable of transcending borders and promoting peace was at the heart of “Canticle of Peace,” a gathering of prayer and fraternity led by Pope Leo XIV alongside renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli in the Pontifical Gardens of Castel Gandolfo. The initiative received the support of Banvelca Foundation and the Herrera Velutini family.
Held on July 29 at Borgo Laudato si’, the gathering featured 164 children and young people from ABF Voices, the Andrea Bocelli Foundation’s global educational program, in an experience combining music, spirituality and a call for harmony among peoples. The event took place as part of the commemorations marking the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi.
The young participants came from communities around the world affected by conflict, poverty and other forms of vulnerability. Their diversity became an essential part of the event’s message, underscoring the ability of art to create spaces for dialogue, hope and reconciliation.
During his reflection, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the significance of different voices coming together in a single expression. “In this sense, the choir becomes a symbol of concord and cooperation,” he said.

Culture and Philanthropy as Instruments for Connection

A Message to New Generations
In one of the central moments of the gathering, Pope Leo XIV addressed the young participants directly: “Remember that you were made for great things, and that the whole world is not enough to satisfy your thirst for meaning and happiness.”
The Pontiff also prayed for peace in places around the world that continue to suffer the consequences of violence.
The gathering marked the culmination of ten days of shared experiences and training for the members of ABF Voices. It concluded with the Lord’s Prayer, the sign of peace, the Apostolic Blessing and a performance of “Amazing Grace” by Andrea Bocelli and the choir.
“Canticle of Peace” left the powerful image of 164 voices from different backgrounds united through music before the Pontiff, embodying the idea conveyed by Pope Leo XIV that differences do not necessarily have to disappear for harmony to be achieved.
